1 out of 5 stars worst gadget   June 29, 2010
R. Kerry (Tucson, AZ United States)
This thing is the worst electonic gadget I have ever owned. It locks frequently and will not unlock unless you take out the batteries, it would not find a way point and is generally useless to me. I am sending it back on warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Buy a Garmin GPS 60CSX   June 25, 2010
AVID HIKER
I bought the Magellan Triton 1500 because it was such a good deal. After I made the purchase I continued to research the product and there were several poor reviews of the product mainly involving the software that comes with the unit and Magellans' poor customer service which is based in India. After many attempts to install the software via my 2007 model Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows Vista, I could not get the computer to recognize the Magellan, so I could upload the required software in the GPS. The Magellan Triton 1500 is a piece of junk and customer service might as well be on another planet. The customer service people just passed the buck and made it sound as if it was my computer. I have never had problems with Windows Vista.I sent the Magellan 1500 Triton GPS back to Amazon and bought a Garmin GPS 60CSX from REI on sale for 199.00 and had absolutely no problems with the unit or software. Had it working and loaded with required software in 30 minutes. Garmin also has U.S. based customer service representatives which are knowledgeable, professional, and will spend time with any questions you have about their products. I have worked in a computer based work environment since 1993 and consider my self to be very technically literate. Magellan has no right to sell a product that does't seem to have gone through much beata testing.

4 out of 5 stars A solid GPS unit once you update the firmware   June 21, 2010

I have been using handheld GPS for the outdoors and fieldwork for over 10 years and most of them has been Magellan. I consulted a lot of different reviews about this unit (as well as comparable ones from GARMIN) before deciding on purchasing this particular model. Yes, it does indeed take a little bit to get used to the menu system and the touch screen interface but once you do it becomes second nature. You MUST make sure to update the firmware to the latest release available in the Magellan website; the earlier release version was very buggy. One of the things that sold me on this particular model was the easy access to the freeware software available to basically make maps from ANY image (even satellite imagery) to download to this GPS and also the ability to turn this unit into a pocket PC (with the right MOD conversion software stored in the SD memory card) which enables you to do a lot more with it than just GPS functions. It is rugged, good screen size and it does its job very well and reliably.

1 out of 5 stars I wouldn't use this if it were free!   May 21, 2010

I consider myself a computer geek but after nearly two days of tinkering I couldn't get a GPS fix or to interface with my PC. I knew it was a piece of junk when I returned it (thank you Boatersworld, you guys are awesome) but didn't realize how bad it really was until my Garmin Colorado 400i arrived. Within 15 minutes I had it unpacked & got a great GPS lock the first try. I was able to upload the maps, software & geocahe waypoints with ease. The Garmin is so easy to use that my techno-phobe wife was begging me to use it.

There's a reason why Garmin is #1 & Magellan is an also-ran. I recommend that you immediately close this page & search for a Garmin. No, I don't work for Garmin, but if I can't run the Magellan then it's junk.

1 out of 5 stars Really cool for the 5 minutes at a time that it worked   May 15, 2010

Purchased this item, took it out on a short hike, 10 miles. While I was playing with it before the hike I noticed it was locking up. I would either have to reset it or pull the batteries and restart. It started doing the same thing during the hike. It locked up and on restarting couldn't acquire any satellites. I reloaded firmware when I got home, reset to factory defaults and put new batteries in, same problem. I checked a few forums and found them littered with problems of the same sort. This is a quality control/design issue on Magellan's part. The odds are because I got a bad one, the next 30 will be just fine. I'm not willing to deal with this again. I shipped it back to Amazon yesterday. I have a Garmin Nuvi for the car and I love it, so I got a Foretrex 401 instead. Its about the same money and it adds the heart rate monitor, which for trail running is a huge plus. Also, vantage point software is very clumsy and not very useful. I didn't really like the idea of spending 200$ on maps for it also.

I'm not sure about the documentation on this. Some places is says barometric altimeter, I couldn't find any such function. It also said electronic compass. The GPS compass was ok when I was moving, but worthless when standing still.

Overall, nice looking product. Very impressive when it works. It didn't work enough for me.
