1 out of 5 stars Outdated technology. Horrible GPS   June 10, 2008
Well, I'm glad I sold this unit years ago right after I bought it (and purchased a different one). The value is just going to get less and less on this. I just wanted to warn other buyers planning to buy this now--DON'T! At the time, I bought this for $200 thinking that was a great deal... This GPS is honestly not even worth $100.

If this is your first GPS, the whole GPS feeling might seem cool at first, but once you actually use this and compare with other GPS units out there, this is complete garbage. It's absolutely useless.

- It takes a long time to lock on to the satellite. (only a few satellites built-in too, which means less reliability.)
- The unit is very fat because of the hard drive. Hard drive is prone to more failures. Makes additional clicking noises, like most hard drives, when accessing anything.
- POI, address searches takes forever. Worthless. Very very low processor.
- The unit cannot turn on right away. It takes awhile to boot-up every time.
- When navigating through the maps, it has to preload each area. It takes forever; it's like having a 28k dial-up connection or less and trying to drag through the maps in Google Maps. Very limited zooming/viewing options.
- Route calculations takes forever. If you go off course, recalculation is completely out of the question.
- Video playback is a gimmick. This is a GPS. It's not even worth it for the video capability because it is strict on the video resolution and file format (I believe it was something really low like 320x240 and XVID) AND because of the slow processor, it can't even keep up with most of the video -- even if you meet the minimum requirement/video bitrate, etc.

This is outdated technology. GPS is getting cheaper, since it's becoming more common, and you can get much better features/portability for your money. Even if this is selling really cheap on Ebay, I suggest you don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars Worst GPS I have seen   April 19, 2008
I got this GPS in June 2008. It is very slow catching the signal and very hard to follow the directions. For every exit automated voice mentions to be on the left. I generally don't try to write bad reviews unless the item is horrible. One positive aspect is JVC customer service has done repairs and sent me back while I complained. Even after the service it's slow but works better. Invest your money on Mio, Magellean or Garmin. I used these 3 brands and they are pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Read Directions, good product for the money   January 12, 2008
This little unit is a great buy for the money - Bought it and had it running in minutes, something my last GPS was lacking in. Even before I downloaded the updates - I still got signal inside at my desk, in a brick building nest to a computer!
Took it for a test drive and it got me there 1st try. Actually bought this new off of that auction site whom we shall not mention, and paid far less than what others are selling it for.
Minuses - A little larger than some units
Sounds are slightly annoying
Pluses - Movie/mp3 playback
Good reception
Well made
Speakers work great
Good VALUE

1 out of 5 stars Terrible and no updates or service from JVC   November 18, 2007
Pros: Cheap. Was on sale for $150 from CompUSA
Cons:
1) Journey over by the time it finds signal
2) If it does find a signal, it sends you the most inconvenient way, tells you to turn where there are no turns.
3) It's too heavy and constantly falls off the windshield.
4) When it shows 3 out of 4 bars on the battery indicator = low battery and it's just about to die.
5) No map update support at all. I seem to spend most of my time driving in the wilderness, offroading according to this unit. (The Crosstown Expresway in Tampa - built in the 70's doesn't exist)...
6) Freezes up almost every time it's switched on.
7) Useless menu
8) Useless in cities due to poor reception
9) Useless in the countryside when driving under trees
Oh, I have another Pro:
For some reason this DID work going through the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 in Colorado... lol

1 out of 5 stars Nightmare GPS - Stay Away!   August 3, 2007
I bought two, as they were on sale. I gave one to a friend. Both units are horrible. I have sent it in for service twice. It has a hard time gaining signal. It loses signal while driving. It does not always give the proper route. It notes exits on expressways where there are none. It freezes up. I have read other reviews. If you want it for a movie viewer, have fun. If you need it for travelling - do not purchase this unit. It probably deserves a recall. Many of the other reviewers had the same problems as me. In addition, JVC service doesn't care if they keep it for a year. All in all - Stay far away!
