Car Mount Great! Tom Tom Rider 2 SUCKS! September 20, 2008 THE CAR MOUNT IS GREAT! NO PROBLEMS! WE WOULD SUGGEST YOU BUY A DIFFERENT GPS THAN TOM TOM RIDER 2! WE FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS A USER LEARNING ISSUE BUT AFTER A SUMMER OF USE IT'S THE PRODUCT. WE EVEN HAVE PROBLEMS WITH TURNNING IT ON AND OFF! YOUR MONEY WOULD BE BETTER USED ON ANOTHER PRODUCT. IF WE HAD TO DO OVER WE WOULD GET A CAR GPS & JUST COVER IT OR KEEP IT OUT OF THE RAIN!
breaks in 4 month September 8, 2008 this product broke within4 months. Tomtom does not cover damaged accessories. So if it breaks after the 30 day amazon warranty your out of luck.
Not to bad actually... August 26, 2008 It's important to realize that in the world of electronics today, so many items are created, molded, assembled and shipped, from China. The TomTom Rider v2 Car Kit is no exception.
That said the product itself performs almost flawlessly; almost.
There are essentially two trouble points with the car kit:
1) The TomTom GPS recognizing that it is mounted to the car kit. 2) The car kit actually supporting the weight of the TomTom.
Let's take the first one...
True, the power does need to be connected in order for the speaker to work. In addition, the TomTom GPS needs to recognize the fact that it is mounted to the car kit which does not always happen.
When you snap in the TomTom Rider GPS and start your car, it will recognize the flow of electricity to the car kit and will wake itself up. In order for this to happen you need to make sure that the GPS unit is securely snapped into place and that the power is indeed applied.
I have on a couple of occasions discovered that even though these two requirements were met, you still needed to either re-dock the GPS unit or remove power and reapply it. At this point, it begins to work and at no point do you need the Cardo headset to get the TomTom to begin using the car kit speaker.
Second, another reviewer or two happen to mention that the mount, when used on a windshield does not support the weight of the TomTom. This is in fact true, especially once the temperatures start to rise from daytime heating.
The mount itself has RAM stamped on it, which if you are not familiar with them, they actually make great mounts. That being the case it is rather surprising that this mount fails to hold in place under duress from heat.
There is a solution. Are any of you smokers?
The mount holds the GPS in place by means of a rubber ball which is inside an aluminum seat of the same shape. When the car kit dial is spun to the lock position it applies more pressure to this assembly and is supposed to hold the ball in place. This does not work as advertised.
Since it is a friction oriented design, there is only one way to improve it's ability to hold the weighty TomTom Rider v2 GPS; apply more friction.
Unlock the car kit by spinning the dial and remove it from the windshield. Turn it so that you can see a good portion of the rubber ball. Stick your finger into your ashtray and get yourself some ash. Poke your finger onto the ball and rub it around. Then, spin the ball in its socket a couple of times. You will instantly notice the friction improve 150%. Clean off the surrounding mount (not the ball) so that it is aesthetically pleasing and remount it on your windshield.
When you have the mount positioned just the way you like it and lock it down with the lock dial, boy will you be happy!
Alternatives to cigarette ash include dust especially from a vacuum cleaner, chalk, gypsum powder, and perhaps even talcum powder. Just don't go out to your yard and grab dirt or gravel. The ash and powders will not harm your car kit like dirt will.
Rider 2 Car Mount alright April 30, 2008 Although the mount is the typical suction cup variety, the adhesive plate that comes with it doesn't remain "stuck" on a sun baked dash... otherwise an excellent product.
Great quality April 28, 2008 The sound on this unit is very good. And it sticks the windshield much better than I anticipated.
