Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The HWREN1 effectively doubles the operating distance of your entire wireless network. Whether it's an area in your home that has limited or no wireless coverage or a warehouse in your office, the Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender takes the signal from your wireless access point and retransmits it at a higher rate. Simply place the Range Extender halfway between your wireless access point and wireless trouble spot. The HWREN1 is the only wireless repeater on the market that supports most wireless 802.11b/g/n networks and devices so you never have to worry whether the wireless network you have at your home or office will work with the Range Extender. The HWREN1 also features a software setup wizard for hassle-free installation. To setup the Range Extender you simply load the CD and scan for a network to extend.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product, Poor Tech Support   January 3, 2009
Received the extender today & configured it up. Didn't use the wizard because it didn't work (it couldn't find the wireless network even though this worked directly from the browser). I have a lot of wireless security including MAC authentication, which it turns out caused some issues. The extender could be seen be remote PCs but they couldn't acquire an IP address. I called Hawking tech support (India-based) which was a total waste of time. The person had me walk through basic configuration from a script. I couldn't go outside the script or she became confused. She couldn't answer any questions - only work through the script which was everything that I already did +. When I asked about MAC level security, the answer was that she had no script or knowledge about that. There was nobody else to escalate to. Very disappointing.

Anyway, I removed the MAC security on my gateway & behold, everything worked. In retrospect, all that had to be done was to add the MAC address of the extender to the MAC access list on the router & this would have corrected the issue. ***NOTE however, that the MAC address is NOT what shows on your extender; the final digit for the extender is +1, so if you end with C8 you really need C9.

The unit itself is good & extends the network nicely. Just know that if you need anything more than very basic tech support, you won't get help.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This product works great.   January 1, 2009
I purchased this product after spending multiple days trying to get other products to work at the far end of my house. As per previous reviews, I connected directly using the browser connecting to 192.168.1.240 with user name Admin and password 1234. I downloaded the most current version of the firmware 1.15 from [...] and ran the Update utility after connecting to unit at 192.168.1.240. I then set the Wireless Security to WEP to match my router(Linksys WRT160N) and entered the KEY to match the router. It did not work until I changed my router and the Range Extender to the same channel as another reviewer had to do. I changed the router from Auto Channel to channel 3 and also set the Range Extender to channel 3. Everything works great! Highly recommend this product.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't extend the range of my network   December 31, 2008
I tried everything possible to make this range extender improve my network . I have a D-LINK DIR655 router and it seems that something was causing a conflict with the Hawkings. My network is WPA2-PSK and mixed G and N devices. 20 feet from the router I couldn't get the Hawkings to work at anything over 40 Mbps. My TiVo and my laptop didn't seem to be affected by the extender at all. The biggest problem, however, was some sort of conflict causing the loss of internet connection. I could access the extender menu hard-wired but not wirelessly. Returning to Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars the only range extender that has ever worked for me   December 29, 2008
I have had multiple wireless routers; Netgear, LinkSys, Cisco..to name a few vendors. I have had issues extending the range using Netgear and Linksys range extenders. The only "solution" I ever got somewhat working is to create multiple wireless vlans (and dhcp scopes) while using the same SSID on both the origin and extender and when I walked to the back of the house, the wireless device would drop off at the edge and receive an entirely new IP on the same subnet as the original, while the SSID and authentication would take place in the background. Not quite what I wanted in a repeater. Along came this product. I would agree with the previous reviews. Ignore the setup CD. It does not work well. Go to the Hawking website and download the manual and just follow that setup (through the web interface). Worked like a charm. For the record, my current router is the Cisco 851WCisco 851W Integrated Services Router - Wireless router + 4-port switch - EN, Fast EN and I am using WPA encryption on my broadcast SSID. This item had no issue repeating it.

5 out of 5 stars great range extender/expander   December 12, 2008
I have a problem with one room receiving signals and have tried netgear g powerline access point and linksys g range expander. the netgear was a joke, still not working after exchange after exchange. the linksys fade in and out all the time and NOT reliable.
decided to give the hawking n range extender a try although was skeptical in the beginning because of the unfamiliar brand. set up was a little tricky, but once you have it working, it is great!
i have to say this is the best one, if only cnet or someone else will make a professional unbiased comparison.
