TomTom not recommended August 12, 2010 Kathleen A. Lawes (Michigan) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
After getting back from a trip to Wisconsin for the first time totally relying on our TomTom GPS, we experienced three major traffic jams. The first when the GPS directed us into downtown Chicago at mid-day with its major slow traffic patterns where speed limits vary down to 45 mph on the expressway. On the way back we hit two 12 mile long backups, one to the west of Chicago the other in Michigan. While the TomTom GPS is not responsible for detecting traffic problems, it would constantly announce "this is still the fastest way" multiple times even when we were dead stopped. When we were stopped in a Michigan jam, I finally opted to try the alternative route button. Instead of giving us a route from the nearest exit, it chose one several miles down because it "determined" that route was the fastest of the two (even though we were dead stopped near the second choice exit.) TomTom "prides" itself on using real time readings from other users to determine fastest current routes, but this feature is worthless when you are dead stopped and the unit still continues to say "you are still on the fastest route" rather than suggesting you press the alternate route button. We contacted TomTom and made that suggestion, but they would have none of it. We will be selling our 530 XXL on craigslist and shopping Amazon for a new Garmin GPS.
Satisfied August 6, 2010 zona I purchased from Amazon the Tom Tom XXL-S 5-inch GPS. I've had it for several months. It has taken me to various places without any problems at all. It did take me a while to understand how to set it up for a trip, but after that, no problem. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to buy a portable GPS for their car. I also enjoy the size of its screen (5-inch) and the voice directions which is loud and clear.
GPS Guidance that You Can See with Ease August 3, 2010 Gary Roberto (Michigan & Florida (both)) Great product. Although it may be among the older units sold by TomTom, it works well, screen size is great, voices are clear, position is accurate.
Not impressed July 27, 2010 Richard J. Windisch (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought this GPS because my wife didn't like using a laptop with Streets and Trips. As usual, Amazon shipped it right away, but it languished at the shipper's terminal. It was a nice looking unit with a large screen and clear audio. Initial loading of the software took 45 minutes. Loading points of interest from Tom Tom's website was very frustrating. Their site said it was a beta. You'd think by now they'd have established a well laid out site and worked most of the bugs out. When you select the icon for points of interest, it takes you to a list. By choosing the U.S. only, the list reduces to 79 pages. Pick a point of interest and it quickly loads. Then the site takes you back to the icon. This isn't too bad when you're on page 4, but at page 55, it's a pain because you have to click on the icon again, choose U.S. again, and thumb through all the pages again to reach page 56. After spending a long time entering points of interest, we took it for a short trip to learn how to use it. Even though we did not opt to avoid interstates and tried both the shortest and fastest route, it insisted on a route that took us 5 miles out of our way on a 17 mile trip. We then took it to South Dakota, an 1100 mile trip. The suction mount quit half way there. We couldn't see too many flaws with the route, as there are only so many ways from Indiana to South Dakota. We couldn't alter a route or enter our own route. We returned it. Streets and Trips works a lot better
