3 out of 5 stars why 3 star   December 2, 2007

I have a Garmin c320 before deciding to get the Tomtom One 3rd Edition, and I am surprise by the usability of Tomtom compared to Garmin.
this is my thoughts
Pros - Tomtom is much faster in boot up and acquiring signal. Also a slimmer design which makes it easier to move around
Cons - the mounting arm is too short. I am a tall person, over 6' and yet I have to stretch to touch the screen of the Tomtom. Of course I can mount it higher, but than it will start to block my view of the road. Also, there is no auto on/off switches unlike Garmin, which detects once you are undocked to start the shutdown sequence. you have to manually on/off the device. The mounting arm is not connected to the charger, so you have to hookup the charger first before mounting the GPS. I am quite disappointed with this design, its totally un-user friendly compare to Garmin, and Garmin is a much older design, I would've thought TomTom will learn something from Garmin, but obviously not

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy TomTom!!   December 1, 2007

This product did not work after one use. Contacted tech support for help. Told me to format and download application and map TWICE, that took me two days and still not working. Transferred to another person on the phone, promised to send me an e-mail on shipping this product back and would send me a new one. Never got that e-mail. Helpless tech support.

5 out of 5 stars Best choice for the price   December 1, 2007

After lots of research and checking with other GPS users, I got this unit for approximately $140. It is really a good quality/cost deal. Here information that you may find useful:

- It is compact but still clear while driving showing you your position and surroundings.
- Multiple voices, clear and precise. The GPS doesn't count with text-to-speech, so it won't tell you what specific street name you need to turn on, but it will give you precise directions while driving using different measurements: miles, wards and feed, plus it will consider your driving speed giving you the necessary chance to maneuver.
- Route reprogramming is amazingly quick. Alternative routes allow all sorts for changes before or while driving.
- Multiple colors, day and night for clear viewing.
- Excellent reception under bridges and tunnels and in buildings-crowded areas.
- The screen during driving is very clear, one quick look and you got the info, plus all the items in the screen are customizable, the touch-screen is very sensitive so typing is easy.
- TomTom allows you to update the maps in the unit plus add lots of other features thru an easy to install software.

In summary, the unit will give you every feature that you need in a true GPS, without fancy features like MP3 and others that don't make to them and take a lot more money from your pocket. The power and capabilities of this unit significantly exceeded my expectations.

1 out of 5 stars Unless you cant spend the extra money   December 1, 2007

Unless you cant spend the extra money do not buy this gps. I recently bought this GPS after my Garman C330 was stolen. I was extremely disappointed with it. The maps seem to be outdated and before I used it I updated the maps from their website. Route calculation was poor at best incorrectly guiding me to the local best buy to return it(it must of known the purpose of my trip). I had earlier entered my mothers address which it could not locate. I tried to find a point of interest namely blockbuster video again could not find. I also looked for restaurants and it does not allow you to scroll down beyond 20 choices so if you are in a busy commercial area you might overlook a good choice. Of course for instance that is if the map even picks it up it at one point gave me a choice of a pizza joint that literally has been closed for almost 5 years. If you want a cute popular gps that looks nice but functions poorly that is also inexpensive then buy this but if you want a accurate GPS that will actually help you get where you are going then go with a garmin or magellin.

I've had this for a few days now. I've used it to navigate twice to a specific destination. In both cases, the TT One was more than a half mile off relative to the final destination. It is routinely 30-90 yards off on judging intersections and turns. I had a Garmin prior to this with no such problems. This is going back and I'm getting another Garmin.
