Disappointing -- Things to consider October 25, 2008 We had a Whistler and decided to upgrade and boy were we disappointed. A few things to consider:
Route Options -- fastest or shortest distance... what exactly does that mean? THese are the only Garmin options. Neither takes you the most direct route, the highway route or the avoid toll route. The Whistler did this. In fact w/ the Garmin, the fastest route does not take into account time of day, traffic lights, etc. The estimated arrival time is thus way off. I started a 7 mile journey w/ an estimate of a 15 minute trip. A arrived 16 minutes after the initial arrival time. The Nuvi kept adjusting at traffic lights. Traffic was not heavy; just city traffic. Not a good estimator. Also on a recent business trip rather than keep me on the highway, the gps routed me down Broad St. through Philadelphia during rush hour. Not impressive. It also took me off highways onto side roads alleging it was faster. Not ideal when you are traveling in new places.
Also to consider, the POIs for restaurants are limited. There is no Japanese, just Asian. There are limited, odd categories.
TomTom was not better . . . Whistler has features other can't match. We are going back to our inexpensive old Whistler and continuing to look for the best upgrade.
Garmin upgrade October 24, 2008 Purchased the Garmin 760 one month ago and have found positives over our old 330 and some negatives. Main negative is speaker which on this version is far less audible than the old 330. The traffic update is ok but difficult to find a station in the Pacific Northwest suitable for use. Positive is the appearance and additional road markings for highway intersections which can appear confusing with the 330. All in all better but the speaker problem is one that does not go away.
Quality going down October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have purchased many Garmin units in the past for other family memebers. This model has unacceptable speaker quality and has frozen during searches which never happened on other models. Do not buy the bluetooth model impossible to have a conversation with someone while you are driving due to the poor speaker and you have to keep the volume down while hearing turning directions its that annoying.
Best gadget I've had priviledge to use in years October 24, 2008 The Garmin Nuvi 760 is a winner. I remember the "olden days" when automobile GPS systems got lost and had me going around in circles. This thing is incredibly accurate, and a pleasure to use. The little unit conveniently and cost-effectively has transformed my driving experience completely. I love knowing in advance when I will arrive within minutes of my actual arrival. I drive with confidence no matter where I turn, because Nuvi keeps me on target with the shortest route. Nice job, Garmin! I would welcome more gadgets like this in my life that truly make the job easier and not more complicated.
Review October 24, 2008 I bought one of these guys for a trip I took from Knoxville, TN to Saint John, NB and several points in between. It worked perfectly. You can pull off absolutely anywhere and it will tell you how to get around which ever town you happen to land in. It knows the speed limits (except Cananda)and recognizes one way streets (again, except Saint John, New Brunswick Canada) and will tell you where to fill your tank, where you can find some groceries, where the library is and all the local landmarks and historical attractions. I figured it all out as I drove, but really there's not that much to figure out. It's pretty simple and straight forward.
